We are rebuilding the Bayside Special Development School.
The modernisation will provide specialist education services and first class facilities for children and young people with special needs from ages 3 - 18.
The State Government provided additional funding in the 2017-18 State Budget that will allow us to start construction on the full school rebuild.
We have appointed Architectus for this project.
All buildings, with the exception of the hydrotherapy pool, will be demolished. The development will include new buildings for Early Education Program students (aged 2.8 – 5), as well as junior, middle and senior years. There will be 'learning communities' with movable walls to create adaptable physical learning environments that can be opened up, or closed down to form individual spaces as required.
Speciality buildings (arts, homecrafts and manual activities) will be located next to therapist consulting spaces. We're designing internal spaces to be light and engaging and to provide students with a choice of environment. All learning neighbourhoods will be safe, transparent and adaptable.
We are also creating a 420sqm multi-purpose space known as the 'Jan Lake Centre' (a professional development centre for DET regional staff). The school will also be able to use the Jan Lake Centre for staff professional development, meetings and events. It will sit on the first floor above the staff/administration building. The administration building will be moved to Genoa Street providing safe access for visitors. We will locate music and multi-purpose spaces next to the administration building to allow for out-of-hours use.
The design will also include an accessible community playground to the north of the site.
Bus pick-up and drop-off will be located to the east of the site from O'Connell Street. The landscape design will include safe and calm courtyards that allow effective movement and learning.
