A new Prep to Year 6 primary school is being built on Ferrars Street, South Melbourne Primary School (interim name).
The school will be the first vertical government school in Victoria and will accommodate over 500 students.
The project's architects have focused on creating space that the community can use so that the school is fully embedded in neighbourhood life.
The school has been awarded the Future Project of the Year at the 2016 World Architecture Festival Awards held in Berlin. It is one of 11 projects selected in the Education – Future Projects category.

The architects for the project are Hayball Pty Ltd.
The builders for the project are ADCO Construction.
The school will be the first vertical government school in Victoria and is designed to incorporate community, sport and recreational facilities, and an array of innovative public spaces. Schooling, early learning and community spaces and services will be provided.
The constrained nature of the site offered the architects a unique opportunity to design an integrated, co-located and vertical schools design. They have focused on creating space that the community can use so that the school is fully embedded in neighbourhood life.
A principal will be appointed in early 2017.
An enrolment plan will be determined when the principal is appointed.
Enrolments will open in Term 3, 2017.
Policies on enrolment, placement, and admission are available on the Department of Education and Training website.
The design and delivery of the school, and integrated early learning facilities, is led by the Authority in collaboration with the City of Port Phillip.
During June and July 2016, the Government sought feedback on the Ferrars Street Education and Community Precinct plans. For details, see: Ferrars Street Education and Community Precinct consultation.
