PROJECT UPDATE...

Construction is on track for the school to open for the 2018 school year.

Places are open now for the first students – see ‘Enrolment’ below for details.

There will be an open day in January (date TBC) before school commences.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Torquay Coast Primary School (formerly Torquay North Primary School) will be a new school opening in Term 1, 2018, built to accommodate 400 students.

We’ve designed the school with the local community in mind and it will be a gathering place for local families and residents to enjoy community, arts, sports and recreation programs.

This is a Public Private Partnership being delivered by the Learning Communities Victoria consortium. Partners include Amber as sponsor, ClarkeHopkinsClarke as architect, Watpac as builder, Spotless as facilities manager and YMCA and CERES as community partners.

FACILITIES

We’ve designed the school to support contemporary approaches to teaching and learning, and to foster a strong sense of community.

It will have ‘learning communities’ which allow the school to create a variety of spaces and settings to best suit different activities and maximise the learning experience for students.

This environment will encourage students to deeply engage with, and take ownership of, their learning. It includes spaces for informal and quiet reflection, hands-on learning, presentations, formal or direct instruction and outdoor learning.

While students will predominantly work in their grade groupings, there will be a variety of collaborative opportunities for them to engage with other learners.

Other key facilities include:

  • an early learning centre run by the YMCA that will help make students’ transition to primary education easier
  • a multi-purpose space that will be used by the school during the day, and by the YMCA to deliver before and after school care and other community programs. For more information about the services YMCA provide for Torquay Coast Primary School students go to surfcoast.ymca.org.au

  • an expanded gym built to Netball Victoria standards
  • embedded environmental sustainability education via the CERES ResourceSmart Schools program initiative
  • a canteen (although it may not operate in the first year because of the low number of students)

While maximum class size for Prep to Year 2 in Victorian schools is 21 students for each teacher, we anticipate smaller classes in the first year of this school – probably between 15 and 20 students.

Parents will have opportunities to participate in school life and support learning through a parent helpers program.
