We built the school with flexible learning areas to support contemporary teaching practices.
A key feature is the central Resource / Project centre which supports specialist curriculum in STEM and digital technologies. This centre includes a digital media lab for video production, a student kitchen to support activities around health and diet and Arts, IT and Science areas.
A stand-alone building houses the school's competition grade netball/basketball hall, along with music facilities, and a kitchen for OSHC and community use. The hall and associated hardcourt areas are available for the local community use outside school hours.
Extensive landscaping focuses around a central plaza that links with the Newbury Community Facility. A dry creek bed has been incorporated in the stormwater design to filter stormwater and ensure the school can handle intense rain without flooding on the site. The creek bed feeds into a wetland on the school grounds which provides environmental learning opportunities. Other areas in the landscaping include a junior cricket and football playing field, an adventure playground and a native woodland incorporating a 'camping' area for outdoor learning.
The building design incorporates a number of environmental initiatives including high efficiency hydronic heating, night purging, performance glazing and extensive insulation. Rainwater is collected and reused for toilet flushing and garden irrigation in the kitchen garden.
Michelle Bromfield has been appointed as the principal for Newbury Primary School.
