About the project
This school will benefit from Victoria’s largest ever single investment in upgrading specialist schools, with 39 sharing $388.8 million. With the funding, we are continuing to upgrade and modernise this school, delivering the next stage of the school's master plan.
The school teaches students with a wide range, and varying degrees, of physical or intellectual disabilities. Our improvements will benefit all students attending the school.
We are building:
- new junior and middle learning community classrooms and spaces
- specialist spaces for performing arts, music and food technology, as well as a media hub and canteen
- a school Community Hub
- upgraded administration and support spaces
- separate parent and bus drop-off/pick-up zones and a new exit road.
We will work with the school to keep the students’ families, and wider local community, updated before each stage of work starts.
Will the new buildings create overlooking or overshadowing?
No, we have designed the buildings to avoid overlooking or overshadowing.
Will there be extra traffic or disruptions during or after construction?
During construction we will minimise potential traffic disruptions where possible. Upgrading the school will only increase enrolments by about 10 students, so there will not be any significant increase in local traffic. We also expect that with better pick-up and drop-off zones, and a new bus exit at the southeast corner of the site on Sassafras Drive, this will improve traffic flow at the start and end of each school day.
What are the next steps for the school?
To understand and meet the needs and sensitivities of students to a changed environment, the school will develop a program to explain upcoming works. This is a great opportunity to educate students about construction, with a positive approach. The school will notify students’ parents, carers, and families of changes within the school due to these works via usual school communication channels.
What are the next steps for the VSBA?
We will work closely with the school and community to minimise disruption and ensure student, staff, and community safety during the upcoming build. Together with the school, we will inform and provide updates to the community throughout the project.
