About the project

We modernised Port Melbourne Primary School by building a new gym for school and community use. We also re-located modular buildings and upgraded the arts and music building.

The new gym is located on the Clark Street school boundary. We designed it with an acoustic ceiling and panelling, and double-glazed windows to reduce noise.

Features of the gymnasium include:

  • an indoor, competition-size basketball and netball court
  • the flexibility to serve as an event and performance space for the school community
  • change rooms and toilets
  • a kitchenette/ canteen
  • rainwater tanks for toilet flushing and ground irrigation.

Upgrading the arts and music building has allowed the school to offer a more comprehensive and inclusive arts program.

This project, designed by Williams Boag, was a finalist in the 2019 Victorian School Design Awards.

Funding

In the 2016–17 State Budget, $12 million was allocated to schools across the State for planning. This included funding for Port Melbourne Primary School. The Victorian Government has allocated a further $5.496 million to the school.
