About the project

We're building a new specialist school in Officer. It will open for day one of Term 1 in 2027 and have places for up to 144 students.

This school will help meet increasing enrolment demand from a growing local population. It will help local students get high-quality education close to home.

When a principal is appointed, they will provide a full enrolment policy including entry eligibility details.

When open for Term 1, 2027 the school will include:

  • 2 learning neighbourhoods
  • an administration and library building
  • a multi-purpose building including rooms for music, drama, food technology and fitness as well as a canteen
  • outdoor hard courts and carparks
  • junior and senior playgrounds, an adventure playground, productive garden and active green space.

Principal appointment

Luke Bennett has been appointed principal of Wayart School. Luke has 15 years of experience as a leader in education, with expertise in inclusive education. He has worked across the UK and Australia. Luke is committed to building a high-performing, inclusive culture at the new specialist school. This is grounded in explicit teaching, wellbeing practices and family and community partnerships. Luke is focused on ensuring every student reaches their full potential.

Enrolments for 2027 are open

The school will provide educational programs for students with mild to profound intellectual disability. For all enrolment enquiries, please continue to email officer.brunt.road.ss@education.vic.gov.au until the new school email is assigned.

Your new school’s name

The school was known by its interim name, Officer Brunt Road Specialist School, during planning and design. Wayart School was chosen as this new school’s name following community and Traditional Owner group consultation. Wayart (pronounced WHY-art) is a Bunurong language word meaning young eucalyptus tree.

Funding

In the 2025–26 State Budget, this school received a share of $336.4 million allocated for new schools construction.
