About the project
We built a new primary school in the City of Wyndham. It opened in 2023, helping the growing local population get great education close to home.
The school will have space for 525 local students and is open for enrolments for students in Prep to Grade 6.
Ashley Craig was appointed as the new principal of this school.
In the 2021–22 State Budget, this school shared in the $491.565 million for new schools construction.
-
Karwan Primary School was chosen as the new school name following community consultation. ‘Karwan’ (pronounced kar-wan) is a Bunurong word referring to the nankeen kestrel.
We used Riverdale East Primary School as an interim name while the school was being built and established. In August 2022, the name of Riverdale East Primary School (interim name) was announced as Tarneit Primary School.
Throughout the school naming process, the department consulted with local traditional owner groups to identify indigenous names that better reflected the local area and surroundings. The name ‘Karwan’ ensures the school has a clear and distinct identity from the other schools in Tarneit and acknowledges the importance of Aboriginal histories and cultures.

Ashley Craig was appointed as the new principal of this school.
Ashley has taught at Broadmeadows Primary School and Altona Primary School. Before moving to Karwan Primary School, he was principal at Seaholme Primary School. Ashley is proud to be the foundation principal of this school and is excited to establish a community-centred school built to help students to grow into global citizens.

Every new Victorian primary school will have a kindergarten on-site or next door. Co-locating kindergartens at primary schools provides many benefits for Victorian families, including making:
- kindergarten programs easier to access
- drop-off time simpler and more convenient
- the transition from kindergarten to school smoother for children.
As such, we partnered with Wyndham City Council to build Dianella Community Centre, a 3 room kindergarten that can offer up to 99 kindergarten places for local families. It also includes maternal and child health consulting rooms, community rooms for supported playground and community services, and outdoor activity spaces including a kindergarten playground and community facilities.
The kindergarten opened in 2022.
